Abortion Investigations

In cases of ewe abortions, it is important to try and establish the cause of abortions so we can try and prevent abortions again in the future, however, we only reach a diagnosis in about 50% of cases.

This tells us that there are a number of other causes of abortion that we don’t yet know about.  The most important samples we can get in an abortion investigation are recently aborted lambs but blood samples from ewes and aborted placentas can sometimes also be important.  Depending on the likely cause of abortions on your farm we may need to try and grow bacteria (culture), look at the tissues under the microscope (histology) or look for antibodies (serology).

Trust our experts to assess the situation and provide you with an explanation and a plan to try and minimise any future abortions.
