Ram Vasectomies

Teaser rams should be in good health and have had surgery at least six weeks before they are required to be used. Teaser rams are entire rams that have been vasectomised so they still behave like a ram but are permanently infertile; they can be used to help ensure ewes are cycling when the ram is introduced and to synchronise the cycling of ewes. 

When done correctly this results in more ewes lambing early in the lambing period and a more compact lambing. However, the ewe flock must be completely isolated from any ram for at least one month before the effect is required. Teaser rams are then introduced for twelve days before being removed and replaced with rams.

Teaser rams should be in good health and have surgery at least six weeks before they are required to be used. While they should not be old
stud rams, it is recommended not to use ram lambs either to ensure maximum effect from your teaser rams. Any teaser ram should be tagged as a teaser ram and should be blood tested annually; teaser rams will be abnormal on palpation and this may resemble abnormalities on palpation from Brucella ovis.
